In computer terminology, a file is an electronic document which stores various kinds of information. For example, an image, text, video, sound and other types of data can be stored in a file. There are also special kinds of files which may exist temporarily or those which need to exist permanently on a computer in order for the operating system to boot up and run. Most of the time, a file exists permanently on a computer as in it can be accessed by the program even after the program is done working on the file. Files are placed within folders that are contained on the physical storage that is accessible with a computer. In essence, folders become containers for various types of files (Kraynak, 2004).

The file management functions included in Windows XP are quite extensive since a number of operations can be conducted on a file. From the simplest operations of opening, editing, closing, copying, moving and deleting a file, Windows XP also offers the user advanced file operations such as setting the attributes of the file to grant or to take away access to the file for specific users. These privileges can also be managed by most other modern operating systems. There are also certain things which can not be done in Windows XP with regard to files for example, have a file which does not have a name or two files with the exact same name in the same folder (Reed, 2007).
